About

I Never Planned to Build a Home Office

Hi, I’m Mohammed Shahid.

If you had met me fifteen years ago, you would have found someone living a very ordinary life.

Every morning I went to work.

Every evening I came home.

Like millions of other people, I had a regular 9-to-5 job and a predictable routine.

Life was stable.

But deep inside, I wanted something more than stability.

I wanted more control over my time.

I wanted the freedom to build something of my own.

Most importantly, I wanted a career that allowed me to spend more time with my family instead of spending hours commuting every day.

After thinking about it for a long time, I finally made one of the biggest decisions of my life.

I resigned from my job and began building an online career from home.

Looking back today, I can honestly say it changed my life.

But not in the way I expected.

I Thought Working From Home Would Be Easy

When I started working from home, I believed all I needed was a computer, an internet connection, and a chair.

That was it.

Or at least, that’s what I thought.

My first workspace was inside my bedroom.

At the beginning, it felt practical because everything was within reach.

But after a while, I started noticing something.

I couldn’t stay focused for long.

The bedroom slowly stopped feeling like a place to rest.

It became my office.

My meeting room.

My writing desk.

My break room.

Everything happened in the same small space.

Sometimes I found myself looking at the bed instead of my work.

Sometimes I felt sleepy in the middle of the afternoon.

Sometimes I simply couldn’t separate work from personal life.

It took me a long time to realize that the room itself was affecting the way I worked.

Then My Body Started Complaining

The bigger problem was my chair.

Or maybe I should say…

my chairs.

Like many beginners, I didn’t know anything about ergonomics.

I simply used whatever chair was available.

First, it was a plastic chair.

After a few months, I thought the plastic chair must be the problem.

So I replaced it with a wooden dining chair.

That didn’t help.

Later, I bought a steel-framed chair with a foam seat and padded backrest. It looked much more comfortable than the dining chair, so I thought it would finally solve the problem. Unfortunately, after working long hours every day, I realized it still wasn’t designed to properly support my body.

Looking back today, those decisions make me smile.

At the time, though, they were frustrating.

Every new chair gave me hope.

Every new chair taught me that comfort isn’t the same as ergonomics.

Eventually, I realized that none of those chairs were actually designed for people who spend eight, ten, or even twelve hours a day working at a desk.

Month after month, I continued working that way.

Then one day I noticed something that worried me.

Every evening, when I stood up from my chair, my lower back hurt.

At first, I blamed the workload.

Then I blamed my age.

Eventually, I admitted something I hadn’t considered before.

The problem wasn’t my work.

The problem was my workspace.

That realization changed everything.

Learning Instead of Guessing

From that day forward, I stopped asking,

“Which chair should I buy?”

Instead, I started asking,

“Why am I experiencing this problem in the first place?”

That question changed the way I looked at my workspace.

I began learning about ergonomics.

I researched posture.

I studied monitor positioning.

I learned why lighting affects fatigue.

I discovered why desk height, keyboard placement, and lumbar support matter more than I had ever imagined.

Most importantly, I stopped buying things based on advertisements and started making decisions based on understanding.

Eventually, after a great deal of research, I bought my first ergonomic office chair.

It wasn’t a miracle.

But it was the first time I experienced what proper support actually felt like.

Little by little, my workspace improved.

My back pain became less frequent.

I could concentrate longer.

Working from home finally became enjoyable instead of exhausting.

I Learned That a Home Office Is More Than Furniture

Furniture solved only part of the problem.

Working from home introduced challenges that I had never experienced in a traditional office.

Sometimes my children needed me while I was working.

Sometimes relatives or guests arrived unexpectedly.

Household noise interrupted my concentration.

Sometimes I didn’t have the right equipment to finish my work efficiently.

For a long time, I believed these interruptions were simply part of working from home.

Later I realized something important.

A productive home office isn’t built only with furniture.

It’s built with planning.

Healthy habits.

Organization.

Clear boundaries.

And a workspace designed around the way you actually live.

That lesson has stayed with me ever since.

Why I Created OfficeSetupLab

During those years, I spent countless hours reading articles, watching videos, comparing products, and trying different solutions.

I found plenty of buying guides.

Plenty of product reviews.

Plenty of “Top 10” lists.

But I struggled to find practical advice that connected everything together.

Furniture.

Ergonomics.

Workspace layout.

Lighting.

Health.

Daily work habits.

All of these things influence one another, yet they were often explained separately.

I wanted one place that looked at the home office as a complete system rather than a collection of individual products.

That’s why I created OfficeSetupLab.

The goal isn’t simply to recommend products.

The goal is to help people understand why a workspace works and how small improvements can make a big difference over time.

What You’ll Find Here

Everything published on OfficeSetupLab supports one central idea:

Helping people build healthier, more comfortable, and more productive home workspaces.

You’ll find practical guides covering:

  • Ergonomic furniture
  • Workspace setup
  • Ergonomics and posture
  • Lighting and environment
  • Workspace accessories
  • Health and comfort
  • Honest buying guides
  • Product recommendations backed by research

Some articles are based on my own experience.

Others require extensive research before they’re published.

Whenever I recommend something, my goal isn’t simply to tell you what to buy.

I want to explain why it matters and whether it fits your situation.

How I Approach Every Article

Every article published on OfficeSetupLab follows a simple philosophy.

Experience comes first.

If I’m writing about something I’ve personally experienced or tested in my own workspace, I’ll tell you that.

If I’m recommending a product or discussing a topic that goes beyond my personal experience, I’ll spend time researching trustworthy sources, comparing expert opinions, reading real user feedback, and evaluating the information before publishing anything.

I don’t want to write articles simply to fill a website.

I want every guide to answer a real question or solve a real problem.

You’ll also notice that I occasionally share my mistakes.

That’s intentional.

Sometimes learning what doesn’t work is just as valuable as learning what does.

My goal is simple:

To help you make informed decisions instead of expensive mistakes.

A Small Promise

I’m not a doctor.

I’m not a certified ergonomics specialist.

And I don’t claim to know everything.

What I do have is more than ten years of real experience working from a home office, along with a commitment to continuous learning and careful research.

My goal isn’t to replace professional medical advice.

My goal is to share practical knowledge that helps you make better decisions for your own workspace.

If something on this website saves you time, helps you avoid an expensive mistake, or makes your workday a little more comfortable, then I’ve achieved what I set out to do.

About Affiliate Links

Some articles on OfficeSetupLab contain affiliate links.

If you choose to purchase through one of those links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Those commissions help support the research, testing, hosting, and ongoing work required to maintain this website.

However, I never want anyone to buy a product simply because it earns me a commission.

I’d much rather recommend something that genuinely helps you than chase a higher commission.

Trust is much harder to earn than affiliate income, and I have no intention of sacrificing it.
